Why We Celebrate

Juneteenth, or June 19, celebrates African-American freedom and emphasizes education and achievement. It is a day, a week and in some areas, a month marked with celebrations, reflection, and rejoicing. It is a time for assessment, self-improvement, and for planning the future. In cities across the country, people of all races, nationalities, and religion are joining hands to acknowledge a period in our history that continues to influence our society today.

Juneteenth Jump-Off at the Atchison River Front
Join us at the Atchison Riverfront to kick-off our celebration with music, BBQ & fun! Back by popular demand, the Young Jazzmasters of KC. BBQ for sale by Black Belt Bar-B-Q, please bring your own lawn chair.

Saturday, June 11, 2016
Juneteenth Celebration at LFM Park (7th and L St)
Celebration events hosted by Emcee “Dr. Love” and “I B Steppin”

9:00am – 3v3 Basketball Tournament

10:30am – “Books & Balloons” storytime with “Miss Cindy”

11:30am - Juneteenth Parade
Parade route: 8th & Riley heading north to LFM park. Parade featuring Atchison Top Dawg Drill Team, Buffalo Soldiers, Tuskegee Airmen, Atchison RiverRods, Boldridge Family Horse Riders and much more!

12:30am – What is Juneteenth Program

(Opening ceremony) Special guest speaker: Alonzo Weston from the St. Joe News-Press and author of “Street Smarts”. Special Recognitions and Juneteenth Proclamation presented by Mayor of Atchison.

1:15pm - Atchison Top Dawg Drill Team

2:00pm - Games & Activities Begin
Inflatable rides and fun entertainment by KC Fun Services. Prize drawings, bingo, Petting Zoo, Trolley Tours, Live Bands & more.

2:00pm - Informational Booths
African-American Art by Mr. Porter Williams, Buffalo Soldiers, Tuskegee Airmen, Mike Boldridge Display, Lincoln School Alumni, Blaq Lyon Chapter, St. Francis/AYS, Expression Designs, Children and Families, Frederick Douglas Foundation, Dr. Eplee, Josh Wheeler, Will Woods State Farm, & Legal Shield.

2:00pm - 8:00pm - Free Food & Drink
Delicious grilled meats, fried fish, and homemade side dishes for everyone! Eat until it’s gone! A variety of drinks available all day.

2:00pm - 3:30pm & 4:00pm - 5:30pm African American Heritage Trolley Tour
Brenda Kerford - Narrator. Trolley rides pick up & drop off on 8th Street near the baseball field. No food or drink will be allowed on the Trolley. (Due to limited space, we are requesting ADULTS ONLY).

10:00am - Interdenominational Sunday School
Minister Mike Hein from Atchison, KS will lead Sunday School for all ages.

11:00am-12:30pm - Interdenominational Worship Service
Guest Speaker: Rev. Tony Carter, Sr. from Salem Missionary Baptist Church, KCKS
Pulpit Conductor: Minister Sean Kelley from Ebenezer Baptist Church, Atchison, KS

An offering will be collected to go towards Atchison Juneteenth to help keep our celebration free! Thank you for your generosity!

12:30pm - Free Food and Drinks

1:00pm - Inflatable Attractions Begin

1:00pm-8:00pm – Peace Mobile
Peace-Making activities for all ages.

1:30pm - Talent Show
Register by 1:00pm to Val Ford or Bertha Crawford (no explicit language, music, or dancing allowed).
Adults: 19 and older
Teenagers: 13-18 years old
Elementary: 5-12 years old

3:00pm - Gospel Explosion Program
Sean Kelley, Bukeka Blackmore, Spencer Kerns, Men of Faith, Agowi Watson, Mary Clark, Minister Adrian Wilson & Elevated Praise.

5:00pm - Relay Races Led by Leanne Downing


EMS & Police will be on duty during the celebration. Only service animals allowed at the park during the event. No alcoholic beverages at the park.
