St. Benedict’s Abbey is a Catholic, Benedictine monastery located in Atchison, Kansas. Founded in 1857, the monks of St. Benedict’s Abbey live by according to the Rule of St. Benedict, praying and working for the glory of God and the good of the world.
Education is the primary apostolate of the monks. They co-sponsor Benedictine College and Maur Hill-Mount Academy. The monks also serve the people of Northeast Kansas as Pastors, Chaplains, and much more. If you have any questions feel free to contact us.
The Abbey Church, completed in 1957, follows the design of Frank Lloyd Wright’s prairie style architecture. It is the spiritual focal point of the campus. The Abbey Church features the 21 by 29 foot fresco Trinity and Episodes of Benedictine Life, painted in 1959 by Jean Charlot. On the lower level of the church are other chapels, often used to accommodate smaller groups of people, dedicated to Our Lady of Guadalupe, St. Scholastica, and St. Joseph.
About 40 monks reside at the abbey, which was completed in 1929. The church was designed by a student of Frank Lloyd Wright and was completed in 1957. It features a 44-foot-high nave ceiling, unique frescoes, and facing choir stalls where monks gather three times a day for common prayer. Self-guided tours.
